LAUNCHING ASEAN ONLINE SALE DAY 2023

 08-08-2023

On the founding anniversary of ASEAN and the launching occasion of ASEAN Online Sale Day 2023, H.E. Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, the Secretary-General of ASEAN gave a welcome speech.

In the speech, H.E. Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, the Secretary General of ASEAN shared:
“Since its inception in 2020, the AOSD has consistently provided a unique opportunity for businesses across the region, regardless of their sizes, nationalities, and locations, to offer their services and goods at discounted prices on a single ASEAN dedicated webpage. This platform seamlessly connects various e-commerce and digital marketplaces and channels to reach millions of customers throughout the region. Thanks to the tremendous efforts of the relevant agencies responsible for e-commerce in ASEAN countries, especially the ASEAN Coordinating Committee on E-commerce and Digital Economy (ACCED), all transactions under AOSD will enjoy full legal protection and facilitative measures in accordance with the stated terms and conditions by individual ASEAN countries.”

The 4th AOSD will run in two weeks, giving the full spotlight to ASEAN businesses to showcase their power in leveraging the digital space for online sales, cross-border trade, and digital entrepreneurship. I am so delighted to welcome more than 150 businesses from diverse sectors, ranging from e-commerce, handicrafts, electronics, furniture, fashion, services, tourism, and food services in this AOSD.

“I would like to take this opportunity to emphasise that ASEAN has harnessed ecommerce and digital technology as a pivotal driver for growth, prosperity, and innovation. With more than 460 million active Internet users in the region today, e-commerce activities hold immense potential for our businesses and consumers. According to the Annual Southeast Asia Report 2022 by Google and Bain, the increase in digital consumers has contributed $200 billion of Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) in 2022 and is expected to contribute $330 billion of GMV by 2025.

The full implementation of the ASEAN Single Window, the development of an ASEAN digital business identification system, a framework for data governance, the establishment of the ASEAN mechanism for online cross-border complaints and investigation, and the expansion of bilateral cross-border QR code payment linkages are among many ongoing initiatives being implemented at the regional level. Furthermore, this year, ASEAN is set to commence negotiations for the Digital Economy Framework Agreement with the aim of crafting a comprehensive regulatory framework for a single digital economy of ASEAN.”
